About the Hikes
Join Cornell Cooperative Extension of Putnam County Master Gardener Volunteers on guided hikes as we explore Putnam County’s natural beauty, ecological history, and the invasive species that threaten our natural resources.
The Details
Hikes will take place on Saturday with the rain date the following Sunday. Each hike starts at 10am and lasts between 1.5 to 4.5 hours, depending on the location and the speed of the group. Upon registration, you will receive meeting location information. - No Dogs/Pets allowed
What to Bring
Hikers are advised to wear long pants, socks, hats, hiking boots or sturdy sneakers with treads.
Insect repellant with DEET or a CDC approved active ingredient, long sleeves and pants are suggested to protect against ticks. Hikers should bring a backpack with water, appropriate trail snacks, and a bagged lunch. Keep in mind that all parks are take in, take out. All we will leave behind are footprints.

starts with a 200-ft ascent. Features include an engineered lake, succession
pastures with reforestation, and old carriage trails. The park is home to
otter, barred owls, coyote, black bear.

Granite Mountain, Hudson Highland Land Trust starts with a steep, 600-foot ascent through hardwood
forests to Lookout Rock, one of Granite Mountain preserve’s three peaks.

Pelton Pond Nature Trail, located in Fahnestock State Park, is an ideal hike for
families with young children. This scenic trail loops around Pelton Pond, a
man-made body of water created by flooding a mine shaft.

Hawk Rock—Whangtown Road (starting at 9am)
features
a 30-foot-high rock with petroglyphs. There is an overall 200 ft rise in
elevation. We’ll also see the old Mead farm with stone chambers and farm
ruins.

Hubbard Lodge
Fahnestock State Park
loop begins at Hubbard Lodge,
combining a walk along an old road through long-abandoned farms with gradual
elevation change along East Mountain. Hike includes scenic views, impressive

Children under 18 are welcome but must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. All hikers will need to sign a waiver.
