The State Teen Action Retreat (STAR) is a three-day, fun-filled event in early May where 4-H teens participate in a variety of workshops and activities meant to challenge, excite and further develop life skills. The event is planned by teens and adults serving on the youth/adult STARR planning committee.
4-H Capital Days is an annual event in late May that gives 4-H youth an opportunity to meet and interact with legislators and tell their 4-H story. This experience helps create an awareness of career opportunities in New York State Government, builds a better understanding of state government, and helps 4-H delegates network with delegates from other counties. Delegates are chosen by their county 4-H program.
4-H Career Explorations is a three-day event in late June for youth on the Cornell University campus. The purpose of this program is to provide youth with exposure to academic fields and careers, help develop leadership skills and provide hands-on experience in a college setting. The event is made up of two grade specific tracts: University U for youth entering grades 8 - 9 and Focus for Teens for youth entering grades 10-12.
4-H Presentations are a public speaking program that helps youth develop skills and confidence in organizing, preparing, and presenting a demonstration, speech, or dramatic interpretation. 4-H Public Presentations begin in March when youth give their presentations before a team of evaluators and an audience of peers. Selected 4-H presenters go on to a regional event from which presenters may be chosen to participate in the state-wide public speaking event held at the New York State Fair.
The 4-H Showcase at the Putnam County Fair provides an opportunity to showcase our clubs and the tremendous work they do. Clubs participate in educational talks and displays, showmanship, activities and engagement with the public.
The Great New York State Fair is in late August. 4-H has been a part of the New York State Fair since its inception. Today, as in the past, 4-H educational exhibits, events, and activities at the State Fair are designed to be an extension of the annual local and regional programs conducted by Cornell Cooperative Extension Associations across the state. 4-H exhibits and activities can be found in over one-third of the fairgrounds.
